Managing developer tools across your organization doesn't have to mean juggling multiple platforms and unpredictable costs. With Claude Code available on your Claude for Enterprise plan, you get a single mission control center for both conversational AI and coding assistance — with the built-in spending controls you need as an admin.

In this guide, we'll show you how to add Claude Code seats to your Claude enterprise plan.

Getting started with seat assignments

Only primary owners and owners can manage seat assignments. Other roles won't see these options.

To access seat management:

  • Log into your organization at Claude.ai
  • Click "Settings" in the left panel
  • Navigate to "Members"
  • Click "View tier breakdown" to see your available seats by tier

Seating tier overview:

Within members, you’ll note three seat types, each of which serves a unique purpose for your users:

  • Standard seats — Standard seats provide full Claude for Enterprise access without Claude Code capabilities. Assign Standard seats to team members who primarily use Claude for writing, analysis, research, and general AI assistance. This tier works well for project managers, marketers, content creators, business analysts, and anyone who needs Claude's conversational AI but doesn't write code regularly.
  • Premium seats — Premium seats include everything in Standard plus Claude Code access and increased usage limits for both Claude.ai and Claude Code. Assign Premium seats to developers, engineers, data scientists, and technical team members who need AI assistance for coding tasks. These seats are ideal for anyone who switches between planning in Claude.ai and implementing in their terminal, or who needs higher usage limits for intensive AI-assisted development work.
  • Unassigned seats — Unassigned seats serve as your flexibility buffer—they're placeholder allocations that let you swap team members between Standard and Premium without purchasing additional seats. Think of these as your reserve pool for handling team changes, temporary project needs, or trial periods.

Assigning seats to members

You have three ways to assign Claude Code access to your team members. Each method works best for different scenarios, whether you're onboarding a single developer or entire engineering teams.

1. Add Members Individually

Individual assignment works perfectly when you need precise control over who gets Claude Code access, or just want to test this flow. Start by clicking "Add Member" in your Members section. Enter the new member's email address and assign their role and seat tier. Choose Premium tier to grant Claude Code access, or Standard tier for regular Claude access without Claude code.

2. Bulk add members via CSV

When onboarding multiple team members, bulk addition saves significant time. Click "Bulk add" and enter a comma-separated list of email addresses. Select the tier for this group of members and click "Add members." Remember that each bulk upload can only assign one tier at a time. If you need to assign both Premium and Standard seats, complete separate uploads for each tier group.

3. Add members using SCIM

Organizations with SCIM enabled benefit from automatic seat assignment as new members join. Your identity provider syncs with Claude, and members automatically receive available seats based on tier availability. Primary Owners and Owners can still manually adjust tier assignments after automatic provisioning. If you run out of available seats, overflow members receive "unassigned" status until seats become available.

The Claude Code end-user experience

Once seats are assigned, end users in Claude Code should be able to select the login method “Claude account with subscription” to direct their usage towards your enterprise plan.

Here’s some copy you can send to users:

“Great news! You now have access to Claude Code through our Enterprise plan! To get started:

  1. Visit the Claude Code page and download the installer for your system
  2. Open Terminal and type claude to launch
  3. 🚨Select 'Claude account with subscription' when prompted
  4. Choose our organization (ending in Claude.ai) in your browser
  5. Click 'Authorize' to complete setup

If you have a personal Anthropic API account, make sure to select our Enterprise organization, not your personal account. Return to Terminal after authorizing, and you're ready to start using Claude Code for your development work."

One enterprise plan, endless possibilities

Claude Code transforms how your development teams work by combining the conversational intelligence of Claude with powerful coding capabilities. Premium seat holders get both enhanced Claude usage limits and full Claude Code access, creating a unified AI development environment. Your developers can move seamlessly from discussing architecture in Claude.ai to implementing solutions in their terminal with Claude Code.

This integrated approach means faster prototyping, more efficient debugging, and better code quality across your organization.

Plus, by managing seats centrally, you maintain control over access and costs while giving your teams the AI assistance they need to excel. As your needs evolve, you can instantly adjust seat assignments to match project demands, ensuring the right people have the right tools at the right time.
