Vertex AI, part of Google Cloud, hosts multiple Anthropic models, which helps ensure Sidekick remains available 24/7. The combination delivers sophisticated multi-step analysis while maintaining the sub-second response times essential for natural conversation. "The reasoning capabilities are great and the trade-off between latency and quality is the perfect sweet spot for us," said Andrew McNamara, Director of Applied AI at Shopify.
The merchant support challenge
Shopify serves everyone from first-time business owners launching their first store to enterprises managing complex operations. Each group arrives with unique backgrounds and challenges. Some need guidance beginning with basic setup, while others need the ability to run sophisticated analytics queries that typically require deep knowledge of Shopify's query language (ShopifyQL).
These diverse needs require technology that can meet merchants where they are. "A lot of merchants would have to really learn how to use ShopifyQL and get pretty deep into it to get insights they needed," McNamara explained. This created a significant barrier between merchants and the data-driven decisions that could transform their businesses. That’s where Sidekick comes in.

Sidekick acts as an always-available partner that helps merchants succeed:

McNamara describes Sidekick as "a co-founder" that merchants can lean on, particularly valuable for small shops just getting into commerce, who typically have only one employee. Sidekick now leverages Claude Sonnet 4.5 to orchestrate complex reasoning chains that would typically require technical expertise.
"Merchants are getting huge unlocks from analytics," McNamara noted. "Now they just ask Sidekick and it can combine other aspects of Shopify—look up certain products, write analytics queries, then use that information to write an even better or more contextual analytics query." This agentic loop continuously pulls in relevant context to craft the perfect response.
The transformation extends beyond analytics. “There’s been a lot of merchants that we’ve talked to that say Sidekick ‘feels like a lifeline for small businesses’ and helps them ‘come out on top’” McNamara shared. These merchants aren’t just reaching their first sale faster—they’re building sustainable businesses with AI-powered expertise from day one.
When a merchant asks a question requiring multiple pieces of information, Sidekick orchestrates parallel and sequential tool calls, each benefiting from Vertex AI's reduced latency. Every hundred milliseconds saved per tool call compounds into natural, flowing conversations that keep merchants productive.
The outcome
Sidekick has fundamentally changed how merchants run and scale their businesses. Complex data analysis that once required technical training now happens through natural conversation. New entrepreneurs can achieve their first sales in days rather than weeks.
"Resiliency and uptime are so critical," McNamara emphasized. "If we're delaying a merchant's first sale because Sidekick isn't there for them, we take that very seriously." The strong combination of Claude's capabilities and Vertex AI's infrastructure is critical toward ensuring Sidekick maintains the availability merchants depend on while continuously improving through rapid model updates.

How Shopify uses Claude Code reflexively

As McNamara adds, observed, "Everyone is way more efficient just from using these models—not just in terms of coding but also content creation, email writing, and countless other use cases."
